Augustus Short was the first Anglican Bishop of Adelaide. He arrived in South Australia in 1847, having been consecrated in Westminster Abbey. He was a capable administrator and a good businessman, doing his best to meet the needs of Aborigines and bush communities, and was instrumental in starting the building of Adelaide Cathedral. Mathew Blagden Hale was born in Gloucester, England in 1811 and was ordained in the Church of England in 1837. He came to Australia in 1847 with Augustus Short, Bishop of Adelaide, and was subsequently appointed the first Bishop of Western Australia in 1857.
